What is Statutory Disability Benefits Insurance?

Sarah is a single mom, working in an accounting firm, when she is diagnosed with a serious illness requiring at least two months off work. Though she’d prefer not to have gotten sick, in one way Sarah is fortunate: she lives in California, which is one of a handful of states that requires employers to provide short-term disability insurance to employees. This means she will get 55 percent of her pay (up to $1,104 per week) for up to 52 weeks as long as she is disabled – money she can use for food, rent and other needed expenses.*
